How long you have

One shore, one unhurried day

Nazareth holds the hidden life and Jerusalem the Passion; this lake holds the years in between. Here Jesus called Simon and Andrew, James and John, made Capernaum his home, taught, healed and crossed the water with his disciples, and after the Resurrection met Peter on the shore again. The sanctuaries are modest and the distances short. Their value is that the Gospel can be read on the ground it describes, while each site is honest about how much is Scripture, how much ancient Christian memory, and how much later tradition.

Sacred Geography

A hillside, two churches at the water, and a lakeside town

The four sanctuaries lie along a short stretch of the northwest shore. The Mount of Beatitudes rises above Tabgha; Tabgha's two churches stand by the water at its foot; Capernaum is a little farther east along the shore. The Gospels name the lake and Capernaum; the other places carry very old Christian memory rather than a coordinate in Scripture.

Excavated basalt walls of the house traditionally associated with Saint Peter beneath the modern church at Capernaum.
At Capernaum a modern church stands over the house the Custody identifies, by tradition and archaeology, with Peter's.

Mount of Beatitudes

A hillside long received as the place of the Sermon on the Mount, where Barluzzi's octagonal church of 1938 stands among gardens above the lake.

On the ground Come in the morning and read Matthew 5 outdoors before the groups arrive. Tabgha is about a kilometer below.

Tabgha

Two sanctuaries by the springs at the water's edge: the Benedictine church of the loaves and fishes over its Byzantine mosaic, and the Franciscan chapel of Peter's commission around the rock called Mensa Christi.

On the ground The two churches are a few minutes apart on foot. Keep them as two prayers, not one stop.

Capernaum

The town Matthew calls Jesus' own city: the excavated village, the remains venerated as Peter's house, and the white synagogue built over an earlier one.

On the ground About two and a half kilometers east of Tabgha along the shore road.

The water

The lake itself carries the Gospel scenes of calling, crossing and storm. Pilgrim boats cross it from the western shore.

  • A boat crossing, arranged locally

On the ground Take a boat if time allows, and read Mark 4:35-41 on the water.

Before you go

Keep it to one shore

The four sanctuaries lie within about three kilometers of one another on the northwest shore. Most pilgrims come by car or coach; Tabgha's two churches can be walked between.

Check each custodian

The Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land keeps Capernaum and the Primacy chapel, Benedictine monks the church of the Multiplication, and Franciscan Sisters the Mount of Beatitudes. Each sets its own hours and Mass arrangements.

Dress and silence

All four are places of prayer. Cover shoulders and knees, and keep silence inside the churches.
