Martin de Porres was a Dominican brother of Lima who made humble work into an act of love. In a colonial city ranked by race and blood, he swept its floors, tended its sick, and gathered the poor at the priory door, and Christ was near in all of it.
Martin was born in Lima in 1579, the son of a Spanish father and Ana Velazquez, a freed woman of African and Indigenous descent. Colonial law and custom placed real limits on a mixed-race child, and his father was long absent. He grew up poor and learned young the trade of a barber-surgeon.
As a young man he asked to serve the Dominicans at the priory of the Holy Rosary in Lima, first as a servant and in time as a professed lay brother. He was given charge of the infirmary, and there his gifts came to full flower. He nursed the sick of the city and the priory alike, begged food and alms for the destitute, and received the poor at the door as though each one were Christ.
Martin died in Lima in 1639, mourned by the whole city. Catholics remember him as the saint of the broom and the infirmary, a man of deep prayer and long nights before the Blessed Sacrament whose charity crossed every line his society had drawn.
A Dominican lay brother of Lima, Martin is honored as patron of the sick and the poor, of barbers and public-health workers, and of harmony among peoples. His relics are venerated at the Dominican church of Santo Domingo, where Lima keeps the memory of its saints together.
