The pilgrimage

The Shape of the Day

Begin by placing your intention before Our Lady in the Chapel of Grace. Then leave the square for St. Conrad’s tomb and the monastery door where he received those who came here to pray. His patient service gives the day a second task: carry the prayer of the chapel into the people and duties entrusted to you.

Keep worship at the center. Choose a Mass from the dated pilgrimage program before fixing the order, sit down for a proper meal, and reserve part of the afternoon for confession or Eucharistic adoration. End where you began, before Our Lady, with thanksgiving. The churches are close; the reason to keep a full day is time for prayer.

What this guide leaves out, on purpose

  • Munich, Passau and Conrad’s birthplace. Each requires a separate journey. They are not additional walking stops in this Altötting day.
  • A complete museum circuit. The treasury and Conrad encounter rooms can deepen a visit, but prayer and the two principal shrines retain the day’s time.
  • Every church in Altötting. Choose confession or adoration where it is available; additional dedications do not by themselves improve this pilgrimage.

Day 1

An intention, a life of service, and thanksgiving

Pray before Our Lady, meet the saint who served her pilgrims, and bring the day back to Christ in worship.

  • Protect a full local day. Book no departure that forces you to cut short Mass or the return to the chapel. Allow six to eight hours locally, including one Mass, personal prayer, a meal and rest. All stop allowances are planning estimates, not service times.
  • Kapellplatz → Bruder-Konrad-Platz → meal → St. Anne → collegiate church and adoration → Chapel of Grace. Move Mass or confession within this loop as needed.
  • See this day on the map
  1. On arrival, around a confirmed liturgy

    Gnadenkapelle · Chapel of Grace

Plan on 45–60 minutes, plus the Mass you choose.

Begin on Kapellplatz and enter the chapel before spending the day’s attention elsewhere. Name the person or need that brought you here. The later walk to Conrad’s monastery should grow from this first act of trust; it can wait while you pray. Outside, take time with the votive tablets before moving west.

Give your time to Prayer before Our Lady, a decade of the Rosary, and an unhurried walk through the votive ambulatory.

Let services and visitor flow set the pace. If the chapel is full, pray in the ambulatory and return later.

If the day runs short: Keep prayer before the image and the tomb visit. Omit the broader church circuit.

  2. From the chapel take the westward approach toward Bruder-Konrad-Platz. Allow about 5–10 minutes; use the Kapuzinerberg lift or a confirmed level route if steps would be difficult.

  3. Later morning, or after Mass

Church of St. Conrad of Parzham

Plan on 45–60 minutes for church and prayer; add 30–45 minutes for encounter rooms.

Walk to Conrad while the first prayer is still with you. At the tomb, ask for patience with those who interrupt your day and for fidelity in the work you have been given. The old porter’s lodge can make his service concrete; visit the encounter rooms only after allowing time to pray.

Whose life this is Saint Conrad of Parzham

Give your time to Prayer at the glass relic shrine, then the historic porter’s place and accessible encounter rooms.

Confirm room access with the Capuchins. The historic porter’s lodge, current monastery reception and upper death cell are different spaces.

If the day runs short: Pray at the tomb; leave the upper rooms and museum circuit.

  4. Pause · Between the morning shrines and afternoon prayer

    Meal and rest near Kapellplatz

Allow a proper meal and a seated rest near the center. Check the next worship opportunity before ordering; if confession is available only later, keep this interval flexible. A pilgrimage day needs enough strength and attention left for the return to Our Lady.

The map pin marks the square for orientation, not a named restaurant. Choose a nearby meal and a seated rest.

  5. St. Anne stands a short walk north of St. Conrad. Allow about 3–5 minutes between the churches, longer if your meal took you back to Kapellplatz.

  6. At the chosen liturgy, or after the meal

    Basilica of St. Anne

Plan on 20–30 minutes, plus Mass or confession as arranged.

Keep the basilica with the western part of the walk. If this is where your chosen Mass is celebrated, move the visit to that hour and let the rest of the route follow it. Otherwise enter briefly, sit before the altar and pray for the families who have come to Our Lady. Its scale serves the gathered pilgrims.

Give your time to A confirmed Mass when scheduled here; otherwise a quiet seated visit and prayer before the high altar.

Confirm the dated program and seasonal opening. Do not assume an old winter-closure notice remains current.

If the day runs short: Omit this stop unless your Mass or confession is here.

  7. Return southeast to Kapellplatz, allowing about 5–10 minutes. The collegiate church borders the square; its adjoining adoration chapel faces the Kapellplatz side.

  8. Afternoon, before the final chapel return

Collegiate Parish Church of Sts. Philip and James

Plan on 30–45 minutes, with a longer stay if prayer permits.

Return toward Kapellplatz with enough time to stop before the Blessed Sacrament. Enter the parish church respectfully, then find the adjoining adoration chapel if accessible. This gives the afternoon a quiet center before thanksgiving at the Marian shrine. Choose sustained prayer over another circuit of architectural details.

Give your time to Eucharistic adoration in the adjoining chapel, or quiet prayer in the parish church when the chapel is unavailable.

The adoration chapel has its own access arrangements. Ask about the entrance; do not treat the main church’s hours as a promise of all-night entry.

If the day runs short: Choose one unhurried period of prayer and omit the historical circuit.

Cross back to the Chapel of Grace for 15–30 minutes of thanksgiving before departure. If the published Rosary fits your train or overnight stay, join it; otherwise pray a decade in your own time. Entrust the unresolved intention to Our Lady and choose one act of hospitality to carry home. This return is part of the pilgrimage, not a second saved destination.

When plans bend

Adapting this day

Plan Mass first

Choose one celebration you can actually attend from the program for your date. Keep 45–75 minutes as a planning allowance for worship, with more for a major liturgy. A morning basilica Mass can move St. Anne ahead of Conrad; a later parish Mass can lengthen the final Kapellplatz visit. Do not chase several services at the expense of prayer.

Make room for confession

If confession is a priority, confirm its time and language before finalizing the day. St. Anne may fit the western visit; St. Magdalena, served by the Paulines on the east side of Kapellplatz, may fit the afternoon return. Check the relevant destination and operator links. The guide leaves 30–60 minutes of flexible prayer and waiting time, not a guaranteed appointment.

Two to three hours

Keep the Chapel of Grace, the votive ambulatory and Conrad’s tomb. Return to the square for thanksgiving. Omit the basilica, museum rooms and architectural circuit; choose Mass or adoration according to the time available. A short visit cannot contain every element of the full day.

For reduced mobility

Use the destination pages’ identified ramps and level entrances and confirm the Kapuzinerberg lift or alternative approach. Keep generous time for assistance, crowded thresholds and rest. The upper death cell is not covered by the church’s wheelchair-access statement. Chapel prayer and Conrad’s shrine remain the priorities if visitor rooms cannot be reached.

Rain, winter and large pilgrimages

Shorten time outside, take a covered rest and confirm church access for your date. In winter do not make a museum essential to the route. On feast days and organized pilgrimage weekends, enlarge the worship buffer, follow steward directions and return to the small chapel when the flow permits; no part of this guide promises a quiet hour.

A deeper visit

Add Conrad’s encounter rooms if they are open and accessible. For a longer stay, choose the newer treasury and pilgrimage museum at Kapellplatz 4 to understand the offerings and sacred objects in the shrine’s history. Check its seasonal access first. An overnight visit gives you another opportunity for morning or evening prayer without turning the day into a museum circuit.
