Our Lady of Altötting
The chapel is small; the history gathered around it is immense. Pilgrims pray before the image of the Mother of God, circle the votive walls and carry their needs to Christ through her intercession.

Begin in the small chapel at the heart of Kapellplatz.
The image of Our Lady, the encircling votive tablets and the silver heart urns show how rulers and ordinary families entrusted themselves to Mary over centuries. This is the original Marian center; the larger Basilica of St. Anne serves major pilgrim liturgies nearby.

First written witness
The chapel is documented in writing. Its octagonal core may have served the Carolingian foundation of King Karlmann, but its precise origin is unsettled.

The image of Our Lady
The early Gothic wooden Madonna belongs to the Upper Rhine or Burgundian artistic sphere. Shrine tradition associates its arrival with Raitenhaslach.

Pilgrimage expands
Shrine tradition records two healing accounts in 1489. The nave was built as pilgrimage grew and stood by 1497.

The votive walls
More than 50 large paintings and around 2,000 votive tablets became a visible record of prayers and thanksgiving.

Benedict XVI
Benedict visited in 2006; his former episcopal ring adorns the Madonna’s scepter. He bestowed the Golden Rose in 2008.

Its precise origin is unknown; the first written witness is from 877.

An image from around 1330, darkened by age, patination and candle soot.

Heart burials
The official shrine records 28 heart burials; 14 displayed urns contain 15 hearts, while 13 urns remain below the floor and unseen.

Around 2,000 tablets and more than 50 larger paintings cover the chapel and ambulatory.
