Shrine-centered city
Our Lady of Aparecida has been Patroness of Brazil since 1930. The devotion belongs to the life of the Church through an image, not an apparition: a small figure of Mary that directs prayer toward her intercession and toward Christ. The great basilica receives that prayer in Mass and confession; the surrounding places preserve the river origin and the successive homes of the devotion. Seeing them together explains why pilgrims cross a country to come here.

How the ground lies
The Passarela joins the two basilicas in the center of the pilgrimage town. Porto Itaguaçu lies southwest on the Paraíba do Sul; Morro do Cruzeiro rises east of the historic center. Keep the river and hill for a separate day so their outdoor walks do not compete with the sanctuary’s liturgy.
The National Shrine holds the original image and the principal pilgrim assembly. Across the Passarela, the Basilica Histórica preserves the nineteenth-century sanctuary and an earlier scale of prayer.
On the ground Allow for the distances within the large sanctuary, the bridge approaches, and the climb into the historic center. The roughly 392-meter bridge is only part of the walk.
Porto Itaguaçu recalls the image’s finding; the Caminho do Rosário follows the mysteries of Christ’s life between the river site and Cidade do Romeiro. Morro do Cruzeiro, across town, gives the Passion its own hillside path.
On the ground The Rosary walk is about 1.1 kilometers. Morro do Cruzeiro is a separate ascent, not a continuation of the riverside path. Arrange the transfer between areas and adapt the outdoor day to heat, rain, and mobility.

Plan 1
Give the time to the National Shrine: Mass if the schedule allows, prayer before the original image, and the central sacred art. Leave the river and hill for a return.
Plan 2
Begin with the liturgy and image at the National Shrine. After a proper rest, cross the Passarela and pray in the historic basilica.
Plan 3
Keep the basilicas together on Day 1. On Day 2, go to Porto Itaguaçu, follow the Caminho do Rosário, and pray the Via Sacra on Morro do Cruzeiro if weather and strength allow.
