St. Claude de la Colombière
He recognized Christ’s work in Margaret Mary, defended her and entrusted his own life to the Heart of Christ.
The Life and Witness of Claude de la Colombière.
Claude de la Colombière came to Paray-le-Monial in 1675 as a Jesuit priest. Christ had already begun to reveal his Heart to Margaret Mary, and those revelations would shape the town’s pilgrimage. Claude listened, discerned and became her defender. His own prayer, ministry and writings helped carry the devotion beyond the monastery.
Born at Saint-Symphorien-d’Ozon in 1641, Claude studied in Lyon and entered the Society of Jesus in 1658. He was ordained in Paris in 1669. Jesuit formation and the Spiritual Exercises shaped the trust in Christ that runs through his ministry.
Sent to Paray after his solemn profession in 1675, he became Margaret Mary’s spiritual director. He recognized the work of God in what she had received and defended her amid the doubts her account met. His role was both discernment and personal commitment to the love of Christ.
In 1676 he went to London as preacher to the Duchess of York. Imprisonment during the anti-Catholic crisis damaged his already fragile health. He returned to France and served in Lyon before coming back to Paray, where he died on February 15, 1682. His writings helped make the Sacred Heart devotion known after his death.
John Paul II canonized him on May 31, 1992, presenting his witness as a call to conversion, reconciliation and self-giving love. At Paray his relics rest in a separate Jesuit chapel. Margaret Mary’s Visitation and Claude’s chapel remain close enough for a pilgrim to encounter both without leaving the town.
