On the Rue de la Visitation
Enter the chapel from the Rue de la Visitation and leave time beside the reliquary. Margaret Mary lived her vocation behind the monastery enclosure. Here her testimony to Christ’s love took shape within prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Pilgrims still come for that encounter, bringing their own need for mercy and a heart willing to answer.
A sister’s testimony, received by the Church
Margaret Mary joined the Visitation at Paray in 1671. Between 1673 and 1675, in the revelations she recorded, Christ showed her his Heart and asked for a response of love, Communion and reparation. Claude La Colombière recognized the work of God in what she had received and became her defender. The Church has received and promoted this devotion through the liturgy and papal teaching. The revelations themselves belong to private revelation: they serve the faith and do not add to the Gospel.
The chapel has been enlarged and redecorated since the seventeenth century. Its Last Supper tympanum and later mural direct attention toward Christ and the Eucharist. The sisters’ choir belongs to the enclosed community. The public chapel gives pilgrims a place to pray without turning the monastery into a visitor circuit.
Spiritual Significance
Devotion to the Sacred Heart honors Jesus Christ in his human and divine love. Reparation answers love that has been wounded by sin with repentance, prayer and charity. The First Friday tradition grew around Margaret Mary’s testimony and Eucharistic Communion. It is a devotional practice, observed within the Church’s ordinary sacramental discipline, rather than an additional obligation for every Catholic.
