Beyond Assisi: Two Days in the Franciscan Rieti Valley

Leave Assisi with two days for the valley. Greccio and Fonte Colombo lie on its western side; Poggio Bustone and La Foresta make a second day around Rieti.

  • 2 days
  • Two sanctuary complexes a day, with a meal and transfer between. Arrive with the first morning available.

The argument

The shape of these days

The road leaves Assisi and opens into another valley Francis knew. At Greccio, the manger gathers the visit around the humility of the Incarnation. Nearby, the Rule gives that Gospel life a shared form. Keep the next day for the northern hills, where forgiveness and hospitality enter the story.

These sanctuaries belong together through Francis’s life and the valley’s own pilgrimage tradition. Two days protect the small rooms and the time between them. The upper cave at Poggio Bustone remains a choice, not a test every pilgrim must pass.

What this guide leaves out, on purpose

  • La Verna. The mountain is north of Assisi and about 201 km by road from Greccio. Give it a separate day and accommodation plan.
  • Gubbio. Gubbio belongs to a northern Franciscan journey. Adding it here widens the driving without clarifying the valley.
  • The full walking loop. Official walking stages require several days and current trail checks. The drive between sanctuaries does not describe a walkable two-day route.

Day 1

Greccio, then Fonte Colombo

Begin with the manger, then let the smaller spaces of the Rule hold the afternoon.

  • Two complexes; allow about two hours at each plus lunch and a generous road transfer.
  • Greccio on the western hillside, then Fonte Colombo southwest of Rieti. Allow an hour between, including parking; stay around Rieti.

  1. Arrive from Assisi with the complete uphill transfer arranged. Park at the sanctuary approach, not at the railway station.

  2. Within the day’s confirmed visiting periods

    Sanctuary of Greccio

Come first to the place where Francis kept Christmas. Give the cave time before returning to the road; this is the visit most worth protecting if your arrival is delayed. Read the older friary afterward, rather than making the manger the last room in a sightseeing circuit.

Whose life this is Saint Francis of Assisi

Give your time to Prayer in the Chapel of the Crib, then the public historic friary.

Allow about two hours. Confirm liturgy and group access; Christmas arrangements can change the approach.

If the day runs short: Keep prayer in the main church; omit the smaller rooms and longer paths first.

  3. Allow about an hour from Greccio including parking and the final approach; this is an ER planning allowance.

  4. Within the day’s confirmed visiting periods

    Sanctuary of Fonte Colombo

After lunch, continue to the quieter sanctuary of the Rule. Two substantial visits are enough for this first day. Begin in the church; the chapel and cave can follow if the community’s access and your footing permit. Do not turn the descent into a deadline.

Give your time to The church and Maddalena chapel; the Speco only if suitable.

Reserve about two hours, then return to your Rieti lodging. Keep the steep Speco descent optional.

If the day runs short: Keep prayer in the main church; omit the smaller rooms and longer paths first.

Stay around Rieti. Check the next day’s openings with both sanctuaries; their midday visitor pauses make a planned lunch useful.

Day 2

Poggio Bustone and La Foresta

Go into the northern hills, then return through the place where Francis was received in illness.

  • A morning at Poggio Bustone, a meal, and La Foresta after its midday pause. Add time if choosing the upper cave.
  • From Rieti go north to Poggio Bustone, then south toward La Foresta. Allow up to an hour between sanctuaries and a separate return to Rieti.
  • See this day on the map
  1. Allow 30–45 minutes from central Rieti, including parking. Confirm the actual road approach.

  2. Within the day’s confirmed visiting periods

    Sanctuary of Poggio Bustone

Give the morning to the lower sanctuary before deciding about the cave above. The memory of forgiveness belongs to the whole place. A group can pray below while fitter walkers make a separately planned ascent; no one needs to hurry back simply to keep a list of four names.

Give your time to Prayer at San Giacomo and the lower public spaces.

Allow about two hours below. The upper cave needs an additional generous out-and-back allowance, daylight and suitable footing.

If the day runs short: Keep prayer in the main church; omit the smaller rooms and longer paths first.

  3. Allow up to an hour from Poggio Bustone including arrival; check La Foresta’s afternoon visitor period before leaving.

  4. Within the day’s confirmed visiting periods

Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Foresta

Return toward Rieti after a meal, arriving when the sanctuary reopens. This smaller visit closes the journey with hospitality rather than another long climb. Francis’s illness belongs to his life as surely as the great moments remembered elsewhere; leave time for the churches and the domestic scale.

Give your time to San Fabiano, Santa Maria and the public Domus route.

Allow 1–1½ hours. Arrange visits through current sanctuary contacts. Mondo X offers no pilgrim overnight stays or meals.

If the day runs short: Keep prayer in the main church; omit the smaller rooms and longer paths first.

Stay a second night if tired or if the upper-cave ascent lengthens the day. Return to Assisi on a separate, unhurried transfer or continue south toward Rome.

When plans bend

Adapting these days

If you have one day

Choose Greccio and Fonte Colombo with a driver and confirmed access. Begin already in the valley. Do not turn a late departure from Assisi into four rushed visits.

Without a car

Reach the valley by checked rail connections through Terni to Rieti or Greccio, then arrange a driver for the sanctuary approaches. The Greccio municipal page distinguishes the station from the sanctuary. Consult current rail and Cotral services for both directions; no complete four-sanctuary public-transport circuit is promised here.

For limited mobility or children

Keep Poggio Bustone’s lower church, omit the upper cave, and ask each custodian about the usable entrance and smaller rooms. A car solves the distance between sanctuaries, not steps inside them.

If La Foresta cannot receive you

Keep the other three sanctuaries and an unhurried second morning at Poggio Bustone. Arrange La Foresta later through its current visitor contact; do not enter private community spaces to complete the itinerary.

Add La Verna separately

Return toward Assisi or allow a dedicated transfer day north. The mapped Greccio–La Verna road is about 201 km and three hours before breaks; allow four hours or more. Stay near La Verna before the mountain visit. Combining both guides asks for at least four days including this transfer.

My Journey

Make these days your own

Greccio and Fonte Colombo on day one; Poggio Bustone and La Foresta on day two. Upper caves remain optional components. La Verna and Gubbio are not scheduled.

  • 4 places across 2 days, each in the day and order the guide gives it
  • The days arrive already built; reorder them, move a place, or drop one whenever you like
