01 · Why Go

The Rule beneath the trees

The church stands above the smaller chapel and the cleft of rock. Descending makes the scale of the place clear. Here the friars remember Francis giving their Gospel life a lasting form in the Rule.

Francis and this place

The friars remember Fonte Colombo as the place where Francis prepared the final Rule in 1223. Papal confirmation by Honorius III on November 29 belongs to the documented history of the Order. The precise cave, the Tau attributed to Francis, and the tree associated with Christ’s confirmation of the Rule belong to the sanctuary tradition.

The sanctuary also remembers Francis’s treatment for his failing eyesight in 1225. Early Franciscan sources tell how Francis greeted Brother Fire before the cautery and afterward said he had felt no pain.

Begin in the church, then ask about the smaller spaces below. The Maddalena chapel and the Sacro Speco remain parts of this sanctuary. A steep stair descends toward the rock; the prayer visit need not include that descent.

02 · Spiritual Significance

Spiritual Significance

The Rule begins with the Gospel. Poverty here belongs to a shared life under obedience, lived by brothers who still pray in this place.
