Assisi to La Verna: Two Days Following Saint Francis

Pray at Francis’s tomb before leaving Assisi. Travel north and stay near La Verna, then give the following day to the mountain.

  • 2 days
  • A short tomb visit and road transfer on day one; 3–4 hours at La Verna on day two, with room to stay longer.

The argument

The shape of these days

The final approach leaves the road for the sanctuary square. The corridor leads toward the Chapel of the Stigmata, and the friars’ procession gathers the afternoon around it. Follow that movement before choosing more paths.

Assisi holds Francis’s tomb; La Verna holds the mountain of his conformity to the Crucified. Here, in 1224, Francis received the stigmata, as Brother Leo and the earliest Franciscan witnesses record. The exact rock places are received through the sanctuary’s tradition. A full day gives prayer room around the journey north.

What this guide leaves out, on purpose

  • Greccio and the Rieti Valley. These belong to a separate two-day southern extension. The road from Greccio to La Verna is about 201 km.
  • Gubbio on the same day. The existing church page supports a separate visit. Detouring would consume time reserved for the mountain and the return.
  • Walking the Via di Francesco. The sanctuary is a major starting point, but the full northern route to Assisi requires its own current trail and lodging research.

Day 1

The tomb, then the road north

Take leave of Assisi at the tomb. Spend the afternoon traveling rather than trying to visit both major sanctuaries fully.

  • About an hour at the tomb, a meal, and 2½–3 hours for the road and arrival.
  • Assisi to the La Verna area. Keep the afternoon as a transfer; confirm accommodation and meal arrangements before departing.
  1. Begin already in Assisi. Keep luggage and the onward vehicle arranged before entering the basilica.

  2. Before the road transfer

Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi

Before leaving Assisi, return to the tomb for prayer. This is a farewell visit, not a repetition of the full Assisi itinerary. Let it gather the intention you will carry north, then leave after a meal with enough daylight for the mountain road and your booked lodging.

Whose life this is Saint Francis of Assisi

Give your time to Prayer at Francis’s tomb; omit the full fresco circuit on this transfer day.

Allow about an hour and confirm crypt access. If Assisi has already been visited, keep only this short farewell or begin with the afternoon transfer.

If the day runs short: Protect the road and lodging arrival. Do not rush a full art visit into the departure morning.

Stay near La Verna. If you arrive early, a brief sanctuary visit is possible, but the scheduled mountain pilgrimage remains tomorrow.

Day 2

The chapel and the procession

Arrive early enough to leave the chapel visit unhurried; arrange the rest of the afternoon around the friars’ current procession time.

  • A full sanctuary day after an overnight nearby. Allow 3–4 hours for chapel, basilica and procession, with room for a meal.
  • From your booked lodging to the sanctuary. Confirm the final approach and current chapel hours; return toward Assisi after the visit or stay a second night.
  1. Arrive from your overnight base near La Verna. Give the final approach time before entering the sanctuary.

  2. Within the day’s confirmed visiting periods

    Sanctuary of La Verna

Give this day to one place. Begin with the chapel when it is open, return through the basilica, and leave the afternoon free for the friars’ procession. The rock paths are a possible continuation after prayer, not another scheduled destination demanding your attention.

Give your time to Prayer in the Chapel of the Stigmata, the corridor and the procession when offered.

Check chapel hours separately from sanctuary hours. Confirm the procession, road conditions and return daylight; omit steep paths first.

If the day runs short: Keep prayer in the main church; omit the smaller rooms and longer paths first.

Stay at a booked guesthouse or in Chiusi della Verna if the afternoon leaves a tiring return. Confirm meal and room arrangements directly; the accommodation’s accessible rooms do not guarantee every sanctuary path is accessible.

When plans bend

Adapting these days

If you have already finished Assisi

Begin with the afternoon transfer and stay near La Verna. The tomb stop is a short farewell, not another complete Assisi day. Your saved guide still contains both canonical places; remove the farewell in My Journey if it is already part of your plan.

If you have only one day

With a car, good conditions and confirmed access, La Verna alone can be a long return day from Assisi. Allow 2½–3 hours each way and 3–4 hours on site; omit an extra tomb visit and the steeper paths. An overnight is preferable if daylight or stamina is limited.

Without a car

The sanctuary names rail from Arezzo to Bibbiena, bus to Chiusi della Verna and a final walk. Check the actual operating day and both directions, including the length and slope of the walk. Plan an overnight if connections cannot protect the chapel and procession.

In winter or with limited stamina

Keep the main sanctuary and ask which route suits your mobility. Omit Sasso Spicco and exposed forest paths. Confirm road conditions locally; postpone the drive when weather makes the approach unsafe.

My Journey

Make these days your own

Francis’s tomb on day one, La Verna on day two. The afternoon transfer and overnight protect the mountain day; internal chapels are components, not separate saves.

  • 2 places across 2 days, each in the day and order the guide gives it
  • The days arrive already built; reorder them, move a place, or drop one whenever you like
  • Works without an account, in this browser

You choose the journey it joins before anything is saved.

Desk researched from Franciscan custodians and official geography. No Eternal Roam contributor has walked or driven this itinerary. Visit and transfer allowances are planning estimates; confirm current access, worship, transport and weather.

Canonical sanctuary identities checked against custodians, regional pilgrimage framing and operator map coordinates. OSRM road geometry checked October 7, 2026; allowances include parking, approaches and breaks. Public transport chains are described without claiming an unverified same-day timetable.

Opening hours, Mass times and access change; each place page above carries its current sources. How Eternal Roam researches and reviews its guides is described in our editorial standards.
