The pilgrimage

The Shape of the Day

At Bom Jesus, the missionary’s journeys end in a chapel. At Sé Cathedral, the Church’s life continues in the people who gather to worship. Keep these two places at the center of the day. Bring an intention for someone far from home, pray before Xavier’s relics, then carry that prayer into the cathedral’s living diocese and parish.

Choose a Mass from the Church’s program before fixing the order. Leave room for a proper meal and seated rest. A supporting church can deepen the afternoon, but the day is already a pilgrimage when it gives its time to the shrine and cathedral. End with a prayer for the Church in Asia and someone you will remember when you are home.

What this guide leaves out, on purpose

  • A second Xavier shrine at the cathedral. The cathedral’s temporary relic exposition ended in January 2025. Ordinary pilgrimage to Xavier’s shrine belongs at Bom Jesus.
  • Every surviving church and the archaeological museum. Keep the shrine, cathedral, worship and rest at the center. Museums and additional churches have their own access arrangements and purposes.
  • St. Augustine ruins and Our Lady of the Mount. Archaeological interest and an elevated continuation need extra time and different preparation; they are outside the core day.
  • A Goa-wide or Asian mission itinerary. This is one local pilgrimage. Xavier’s wider mission places belong to separate journeys.

Day 1

A missionary’s shrine and the Church he served

Pray before Xavier’s relics, then turn toward the living Church of Goa at its cathedral.

  • Protect five to seven hours locally when including one Mass, shrine prayer, a meal and one voluntary continuation. These are planning allowances, not opening hours or service times. Move the two anchors around the confirmed worship program.
  • Bom Jesus → Sé Cathedral → meal and seated rest → one optional sacred continuation → final prayer. Reverse the church order if your confirmed Mass requires it.
  • See this day on the map
  1. On arrival, around a confirmed Mass

    Basilica of Bom Jesus

Plan on 60–90 minutes, plus Mass and any actual pilgrim queue.

Begin with the person or need that brought you to Old Goa. Enter Bom Jesus and find Xavier’s chapel on the right as you face the main altar. Pray for missionaries, for the Church in Asia and for someone far from home. Give this intention time before turning the visit into a circuit of details. The later walk to the cathedral should grow from this first prayer.

Whose life this is Saint Francis Xavier

Give your time to Prayer at the hosted shrine, then the nave and the principal altar dedicated to Bom Jesus; Mass when the confirmed program fits.

Ordinary veneration is from the chapel floor before the elevated casket. The exceptional close-viewing arrangement of the 2024–25 exposition has ended. Ask about confession and the day’s worship before arrival.

If the day runs short: Keep shrine prayer and the cathedral. Omit the wider church circuit.

  2. Continue across the central church precinct toward Sé Cathedral, allowing time for the road crossing and entrance. Use 10–15 minutes as a desk-planning buffer; allow longer with heat, rain or mobility assistance.

  3. After the shrine, or at the Mass you have confirmed

    Sé Cathedral

Plan on 45–60 minutes, plus any Mass or confession you arrange.

Sit in the cathedral before taking a circuit of its chapels. The mission remembered at the shrine continues in Goan families, priests and parish communities. Pray for those preparing to serve the Church, and for the people whose weekly worship gives this place its life. At the principal altar, Saint Catherine’s dedication gives the visit a second witness to Christ.

Give your time to A confirmed liturgy when available; otherwise seated prayer in the nave and attention to Saint Catherine’s principal altar.

Xavier’s relics came here temporarily during the solemn exposition, November 21, 2024 to January 5, 2025. Bom Jesus remains their permanent shrine. Confirm the cathedral’s current visitor and worship arrangements.

If the day runs short: Keep prayer in the nave and the principal altar. Leave side chapels for another visit.

  4. Pause · Between the two anchors and any afternoon continuation

    A meal and seated rest

Allow a proper meal and seated rest in the Old Goa area, with water close at hand. Check the next worship opportunity before choosing an afternoon continuation. In heat or heavy rain, shorten the optional circuit before cutting all time for rest.

Choose a nearby place for a meal and seated rest. The map point marks the central church precinct for orientation.

  5. In passing · Only if access, strength and time allow

    Choose one sacred continuation

St. Francis of Assisi can add Franciscan sacred art beside the cathedral complex; he is a different saint from Xavier. Alternatively, the church popularly called St. Cajetan offers the Marian focus of Our Lady of Divine Providence and Theatine history. Confirm access and leave time to pray. Our Lady of the Rosary on Monte Santo is an uphill Marian choice, traditionally associated locally with Xavier’s catechesis. Keep that association distinct from the documented shrine at Bom Jesus.

Choose only one additional church if strength, access and time permit. Museum admission and hill approaches need separate checks; skip them when rain, heat or mobility limits make the two central churches enough.

Return to Bom Jesus if access and strength permit, or conclude at the cathedral after the Mass you chose. Ask Saint Francis Xavier for fidelity to the people and work entrusted to you. Carry one intention for the Church in Asia home.

When plans bend

Adapting these days

Limited mobility

Keep the two anchors and arrange entrance-to-entrance assistance. Ask each custodian about the actual entrance, thresholds and space before the shrine. Special exposition wheelchair arrangements do not certify ordinary access. Skip hill churches and extended museum visits.

Families

Explain the difference between a saint, his sacred relics, the casket and the church that preserves them. Give children short pauses and seated rest; keep the shrine and cathedral before adding any third church.

Heat or monsoon rain

Carry water and rain protection. Protect a proper seated break and allow a return vehicle. Shorten outdoor walking and optional churches when conditions demand it; do not assume every approach is shaded.

Around the annual feast

The feast is December 3, with its own worship, crowds and traffic arrangements. Confirm current Church and government notices. The photographs dated December 3, 2025 show annual-feast context, not a continuing solemn exposition.

My Journey

Make these days your own

Save Bom Jesus and Sé Cathedral in the order of this day. Keep time for Mass, prayer and rest when adjusting your plan; choose an additional church only when you have time.

  • 2 places across 1 days, each in the day and order the guide gives it
  • The days arrive already built; reorder them, move a place, or drop one whenever you like
  • Works without an account, in this browser

You choose the journey it joins before anything is saved.
