Lisieux gives you a whole life in one walk. The trick is the order: begin where she was a child, end where the world came looking for her, and do not do it the other way round.
The argument
Almost every visitor to Lisieux arrives at the station, sees the basilica on the hill above them, and starts there. It is the wrong beginning. The basilica was raised after Thérèse's canonization in 1925 and she never saw it; starting there means meeting the devotion before meeting the person, and everything afterwards feels smaller. The town itself argues for the other order. Les Buissonnets is at the top of the northern rise, the cathedral is below it in the center, the Carmel five minutes further, and the basilica on the far hill above the station. Walked that way the day is chronological, almost entirely downhill, and it finishes ten minutes from a train home. This guide takes that order and keeps the Carmel, not the basilica, as the center of gravity, because that is where she actually lived and where her reliquary rests.

Direct trains run from Paris Saint-Lazare on the Normandy line, taking about two hours. Lisieux is a scheduled stop rather than a terminus, so watch the announcements.
Uphill for most of it. A taxi from the station rank takes five minutes and removes the only real climb of the day; it is money well spent if the hill is a question.

The station sits below the basilica hill. Turning your back on the basilica and walking north through the town to the far rise is the deliberate beginning of this day.
Closed on Sunday mornings and on August 15, December 25 and January 1. Entry is by donation. There are stairs between floors.

The house Louis Martin rented in November 1877, weeks after Zélie died, and where Thérèse lived from four until she entered the Carmel at fifteen. Three of the moments she wrote about happened here: the healing she called the smile of the Virgin, the Christmas night of 1886, and the conversation in the garden at Pentecost 1887 when her father agreed to let her go.

Give your time to The dining room, her bedroom, the fireplace, and the garden. The rooms are small and the smallness is the point.
About ten minutes downhill from Les Buissonnets, into the town center. The cathedral square is level.

The parish church of the Martin family, begun about 1149 and among the earliest Gothic buildings in Normandy. This is where Thérèse's faith was ordinary: Sunday high Mass with her father and sisters, her first confession, and at fourteen the prayer for a condemned murderer that she counted as her first spiritual child.

The streets around the cathedral square hold most of what there is to eat in Lisieux. Stopping properly here is what makes the Carmel work in the afternoon rather than arriving at it tired.

She entered here on April 9, 1888 at fifteen, lived nine years, wrote the manuscripts that became Story of a Soul, and died in the infirmary on September 30, 1897 at twenty-four. Her reliquary rests in the chapel. The Memorial next to it holds objects from her religious life. The monastery itself is enclosed and is not visited, because Carmelites still live in it.
Give your time to Sit in the chapel for a while before going to the shrine. Then the châsse, then the Memorial. If you are here at a quarter past eleven on another day, come to Mass instead.
Ten minutes uphill from the Carmel. From the basilica the station is about ten minutes downhill.

The last stop, and now it means something. Begun in 1929, four years after her canonization, blessed in 1937 and consecrated in 1954, and built for three thousand pilgrims with nothing in the way of the altar. Thérèse never saw it. Go down to the crypt, where the relics of her parents, Saints Louis and Zélie Martin, are venerated.
Give your time to The nave and the mosaics, then the crypt and the reliquaries of Louis and Zélie. The crypt closes about fifteen minutes before the basilica, so do not leave it last.
Check the last departures when you arrive in the morning, and book the return if you are traveling in season.

The station is ten minutes below the basilica, which is why finishing here works. Trains run back to Saint-Lazare into the evening.
If you are staying, the Carmel chapel opens from about seven in the morning. A second visit before the coaches arrive is the best hour anyone gets in Lisieux.

When plans bend
Direct services run from Paris Saint-Lazare toward Caen and Cherbourg and stop at Lisieux, taking about two hours. That is four hours of traveling in a single day, which is the strongest practical argument for staying the night. Reservations are usual on this line; book ahead in summer and around the start of October.

Les Buissonnets is closed on Sunday mornings, which breaks the chronological order. Take the cathedral for Sunday Mass in the morning, then the Carmel, then Les Buissonnets in the afternoon when it opens, and finish at the basilica. It works, and it is the one day the sequence has to bend.
The Carmel and the basilica, in that order, and nothing else. Both are within fifteen minutes of the station. Skipping Les Buissonnets loses the person, but a rushed house visit loses her too.
Mass is celebrated at the Carmel at about a quarter past eleven, in the basilica crypt in the late afternoon, in the basilica itself on Sunday late morning, and at the cathedral in the evening on weekdays. The Carmel Mass is the one to build a day around if you can, because the community sings the office behind the grille.
The cathedral, the Carmel and the basilica are all broadly step-free once you are inside, and the basilica has lifts to the crypt and the dome. Les Buissonnets has stairs between floors and sits at the top of the northern rise. Taxis in Lisieux are inexpensive and a single ride up to the house removes the whole difficulty of the day.
The sanctuary runs on four seasonal bands through the year and Les Buissonnets closes earlier in winter than in summer. Do not plan from a remembered time; the sanctuary publishes current hours for every site on one page.
Four hours on trains for six hours on the ground is a poor exchange for a town this quiet. Staying gives you Mass at the Carmel, an evening when the day visitors have gone, and a second morning in the chapel from seven o'clock. Lisieux has limited accommodation, so book ahead in the pilgrimage season and well ahead around October 1.
