At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, the shrine of Mother Theodore Guérin stands within a living religious community. Her story is not finished at a tomb: the sisters still pray and serve on the grounds she helped establish.
Anne-Thérèse Guérin was born in Brittany in 1798 and entered the Sisters of Providence. In 1840 she led a small group of sisters to the Indiana frontier, where they began a new foundation with few resources and no guarantee of comfort or permanence.
The sisters opened schools, cared for the poor, and built a community sustained by Eucharistic prayer and trust in Divine Providence. Mother Theodore faced illness, scarce money, travel, and difficult ecclesial relationships without abandoning the mission.
She died at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in 1856. Benedict XVI canonized her in 2006. Her remains now rest in the shrine, where the continuing life of the Sisters of Providence keeps her founding vocation visible.
Mother Theodore trusted Providence through concrete decisions: opening schools, keeping a community together, and caring for people whose needs could not wait for ideal conditions.
