St. Raphael Kalinowski
After military service and Siberian exile, Józef Kalinowski entered Carmel and gave his later years to prayer, confession, and rebuilding the order in Poland.

At the Carmelite sanctuary in Wadowice, Saint Raphael Kalinowski’s cell and relics recall the last years of his life. His principal tomb, however, is at Czerna. Those two places must not be confused.
Born Józef Kalinowski in Vilnius in 1835, he trained as a military engineer and took part in the Polish uprising of 1863. Russian authorities sentenced him to death, commuted the sentence, and sent him into Siberian exile. The experience changed the direction of his life without erasing his service to his country.
In 1877 he entered the Discalced Carmelites, taking the name Raphael of Saint Joseph. Ordained in 1882, he became known as a confessor and spiritual director and worked for the renewal of Carmel in Poland. He founded the Wadowice house in 1892.
Raphael died there in 1907 and was buried at Czerna, where his principal tomb remains. Wadowice preserves his cell and first-class relics. John Paul II canonized him in 1991, giving the Church a witness to conversion, endurance, and the patient rebuilding of religious life.
Raphael’s life did not follow a straight path from childhood to cloister. Exile, national duty, and later Carmelite service were all brought into a priesthood of reconciliation.
