01 · The Life and Witness

The Life and Witness of Lawrence of Rome.

At San Lorenzo fuori le Mura, the pilgrim comes to the tomb venerated as Lawrence's. The grave gives historical weight to a martyr whose later stories became larger than the surviving early record.

Lawrence was a deacon of the Roman Church when Valerian's persecution struck its clergy. Pope Sixtus II was executed on August 6, 258; Lawrence died four days later. His service to the poor belongs to the deacon's ministry and to the Church's early memory of him, though the famous scene in which he presents the poor as the Church's treasures comes to us through later telling.

The gridiron became his enduring sign in Christian art. The Roman liturgical tradition has carried this account since antiquity, while the manner of his death is less securely documented than his name, office, date, and burial. That distinction does not diminish the faith for which he died.

He was buried on the Via Tiburtina, and the basilica grew around the place of veneration. The site remains a station in Roman prayer and pilgrimage. Come for Mass if possible, then go to the tomb; the Church's charity and the martyr's courage belong together there.

Lawrence's grave and feast keep a deacon's service to Christ and the poor at the center of Rome's martyr memory.
