St. André Bessette
At a college door and on Mount Royal, Brother André met suffering with prayer, hospitality and steady devotion to Saint Joseph.

The Life and Witness of André Bessette.
Alfred Bessette was born in Québec on August 9, 1845. Frail in health and poor in means, he entered the Congregation of Holy Cross and became Brother André. His decades as porter at Collège Notre-Dame made an ordinary threshold a place where people burdened by illness, poverty and grief could be received.
André listened, prayed and directed visitors toward Saint Joseph. The number of people who came to him grew, and so did the hope of a chapel on Mount Royal. In 1904 he and companions began the modest Oratory chapel. The present basilica developed over decades; he did not build that vast church himself.
The Church understood his witness through prayer and charity, not spectacle. He did not claim power over illness. Pilgrims remembered his welcome and reported favors through Saint Joseph’s intercession; the Church examined testimony in the cause for his canonization. His life asks us to see the person who suffers before seeking an extraordinary story.
Brother André died on January 6, 1937. Saint John Paul II beatified him in 1982, and Benedict XVI canonized him on October 17, 2010. The Oratory remains the principal place to pray at his tomb and to follow his trust in God through Saint Joseph.
