A living national shrine to Saint Joseph on Mount Royal, grown from Saint Brother André's small chapel and sustained by prayer for those who suffer.

Begin in prayer
Come first to pray to God with Saint Joseph. Brother André welcomed those burdened by sickness and poverty, invited them to trust Saint Joseph's intercession, and founded a small chapel on this mountain. Pilgrims still carry petitions through the Original Chapel, Crypt Church, Votive Chapel and basilica. His tomb gives this devotion a human face without displacing the Lord to whom his life pointed.
A living Catholic history
In 1904 Brother André and companions began the first modest chapel. Construction of the Crypt Church began in 1915 and it opened in 1917. The cornerstone for a larger basilica was blessed in 1924. Brother André died on January 6, 1937, before that church was complete. The Votive Chapel and tomb alcove were developed in the 1940s and inaugurated in 1950. The first solemn Mass in the basilica followed in 1954, and it was raised to a minor basilica on Saint Joseph's feast in 1955. Interior work continued later in the century. The Church canonized Brother André in 2010.
The climb from the Original Chapel to the basilica lets pilgrims read the shrine's growth in stone. The Crypt Church remains a place of Mass and devotion to Saint Joseph. In the Votive Chapel, candles witness to prayers offered across generations. The first chapel keeps the story close to Brother André’s ordinary work as a porter: he received people one by one, prayed with them, and pointed them toward Saint Joseph. From that intimate beginning the route rises through larger spaces built for a growing community of pilgrims.
Spiritual Significance
Brother André's black granite tomb is in a room beside the Votive Chapel. His heart is preserved separately in a reliquary in the exhibition about his life. The distinction matters: the tomb is a burial place; the heart relic is encountered in the exhibition.
