The mountain road leaves the ancient city behind. At the small stone shrine, pilgrims enter quietly, bring their petitions to Mary, and join the Church’s worship when the current schedule permits. John’s Gospel entrusts Mary to the beloved disciple. Early Ephesian memory places John in the region; the inference that Mary also lived here belongs to a much later tradition. Neither that uncertainty nor the nineteenth-century identification of this particular site takes away the reality of prayer offered here today.

John 19:26–27 records Jesus entrusting his mother to the beloved disciple. The Gospel gives no destination for her later life.

John remembered at Ephesus
Polycrates of Ephesus, preserved by Eusebius, witnesses to John’s death at Ephesus. This does not place Mary there.

An Ephesian Marian tradition
The surviving tradition that Mary accompanied John to Ephesus appears much later than the apostolic testimony.

The present site identified
Searchers identified this place in connection with published visionary descriptions associated with Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich. Clemens Brentano’s texts cannot simply be treated as her dictated words.

Papal pilgrimage
Paul VI, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI came as pilgrims. Their visits honor the shrine; they do not authenticate Mary’s residence in this building.
