Mother Angelica's tomb belongs within this Eucharistic pilgrimage, but it is not a canonized saint's shrine and her remains are not presented as relics. Pray for her soul, give thanks for the courage with which she proclaimed the faith, and leave the Church's judgments to the Church. The Shroud display is a replica. The Divino Niño story is reported through Mother Angelica's account, not presented as an approved apparition.
A Shrine Built Around Adoration
Mother Angelica founded Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Alabama for the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration and led the building of the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament on 400 acres near Hanceville. Inspired by the churches of Assisi and the Umbrian countryside, the shrine opened in 1999 as a public place of Eucharistic pilgrimage beside the nuns' enclosure. The cloistered community continued its hidden vocation of prayer while pilgrims came for Mass, confession, and adoration. After Mother Angelica's death in 2016, her tomb was placed in the lower church.
The broad plaza and colonnades establish a long threshold before the Romanesque-Gothic church. Stone, tile roofs, carved wood, and the lower church evoke the sacred architecture Mother Angelica encountered in Italy, but the interior program is distinctly Eucharistic: altar, tabernacle, reredos, and monstrance direct the pilgrim to Christ truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. The architecture prepares reverence; the Eucharist gives it meaning.
