Benedictine Life in the Carolina Piedmont
Benedictine monks established the community in 1876 on land that grew into a 700-acre monastic campus. Their prayer, education, hospitality, and pastoral service helped shape Catholic life in a region where the Church was still small. The abbey church, built in 1892, served for a time as a cathedral and later received the title of minor basilica. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, yet its deepest continuity is simpler: monks still enter it for the Hours and the Eucharist.
The twin-towered Gothic Revival Basilica of Mary Help of Christians gives the abbey a clear public face. Pointed arches, stained glass, timber, stone, and a long nave lead toward the altar while the monks' choir gives the building its daily voice. Historic recognition protects a significant church; monastic prayer keeps it from becoming only a preserved object.
