Worship and reception
The sanctuary has Mass, confession in different languages and Eucharistic adoration. Confirm the language, church and access for your date with shrine reception. If the website does not display a usable timetable, contact the shrine or read notices on arrival.
Ask reception about usable entrances, seating, toilets and assistance. Arrange local transport if the exposed walk to the Tank is too demanding; distance alone does not establish step-free access.
The diocese describes shrine pilgrim quarters. Confirm booking, meals and the actual distance to your chosen church; neither a room nor a particular rate is guaranteed.
Arrival and the pilgrimage day
Vailankanni has its own railway station; search both Velankanni (VLNK) and Nagapattinam for your travel date. Direct services and festival specials vary. Nagapattinam is about 12 km away by road and remains a useful rail and bus gateway. Check Indian Railways for the actual service and arrange the last bus, taxi or auto-rickshaw leg.
Compare Tiruchirappalli (Trichy, TRZ) flights first: the district identifies it as the nearest international airport to Nagapattinam. The onward journey still needs a substantial road or rail transfer. Chennai is a longer gateway, useful when its flights or your wider Tamil Nadu journey make sense. Confirm the complete transfer before booking.
The basilica and Tank chapel lie roughly 0.8 km apart on the map. Allow 20–30 minutes each way as a planning estimate, more for prayer, heat, crowds or assistance. The Stations and Rosary path joins the pilgrimage; Morning Star Church is in the western sanctuary area.
Keep the outdoor walk for early morning or later afternoon and leave a midday break for food, water and shade. Coastal heat and humidity make an uninterrupted church circuit tiring. October through December is Tamil Nadu’s northeast monsoon season; check IMD warnings and local access notices before a coastal journey, and shorten outdoor plans in heavy rain.
The annual celebrations normally run from August 29 through September 8, the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, opening with flag hoisting and including processions. Book lodging and transport well ahead, allow for queues and diversions, and use the current shrine program rather than ordinary-day timings.
Bring the person for whom you are praying.
The white towers rise above a coastal town filled with pilgrims. Enter the basilica and pause before Our Lady with the Child Jesus. Some come carrying an illness; others return in thanksgiving or pray for someone who cannot travel. Mary receives these intentions and brings them to her Son. Mass, confession and Eucharistic adoration give the pilgrimage its center. This is Tamil Catholic life welcoming pilgrims from across India and beyond, with prayer in more than one language. Choose a service you can follow and leave enough time to stay. Our Lady of Health is also invoked as Arokia Matha. The devotion has traveled with pilgrims beyond India; the church in Medan, Indonesia, is a separate sanctuary under the same Marian title.
What happened here.
The tradition is old; the sanctuary’s prayer continues.
-
The founding tradition
The milk boy and the buttermilk seller
The shrine’s received tradition remembers Mary with the Child Jesus meeting a boy carrying milk near the pond now called Matha Kulam, Our Lady’s Tank. A second account remembers the healing of a boy selling buttermilk at Nadu Thittu and the request for a chapel. These encounters live in the devotion as stories of generosity, maternal care and healing; their precise dates and narrative details are not established by contemporary records.
-
The sailors’ thanksgiving
A chapel after the storm
Portuguese sailors are remembered as invoking Our Lady in a storm and building in thanksgiving after reaching this coast. The diocese distinguishes this oral tradition from documents that mention a Christian center and a chapel of Our Lady of Health in the seventeenth century. The archival references support the early shrine’s existence, rather than proving every detail of the storm account.

The sanctuary today
A basilica and a wider place of worship
The shrine is a minor basilica within the Diocese of Thanjavur. The main church and its extensions are joined by Morning Star Church, blessed and opened in 2013, and the separate Tank chapel. The sanctuary hosted the international World Day of the Sick in 2002. Its growth serves pilgrims gathering for worship, reconciliation and prayer.
Let worship shape the day.
Confirm the church, language and service time at reception.

- 03 Rosary and Stations Follow the devotional path toward the Tank with time for pauses.

The current worship program
Morning Star Church and the basilica extensions serve the same sanctuary. Your Mass may be in a different building.
From the basilica toward the Tank

Morning Star Church serves the same sanctuary near the Tank; the basilica extensions, Nadu Thittu church, adoration and reconciliation facilities and museum of offerings belong to the wider pilgrimage complex. A devotion received by the Church
Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health, Vailankanni is a place of Marian intercession and Catholic worship. The DDF’s August 1, 2024 letter, approved by Pope Francis, warmly supports its pilgrimage and recognizes the action of the Holy Spirit here. It also welcomes non-Christian pilgrims seeking consolation while respecting Catholic sacramental life. The letter receives the founding traditions with reverence; it does not issue a technical judgment establishing each narrative detail as historical fact.
