Saint Dulce of the Poor made mercy concrete in Salvador: food, care, and a place for those who had nowhere else to go. The sanctuary stands beside the Obras Sociais Irmã Dulce, so her tomb is encountered within the continuing work that grew from her vocation. Prayer here should keep her service to the poor in view.
From the Cine Roma to a sanctuary
The sanctuary opened in 2003 on a site associated with Sister Dulce’s earlier workers’ initiatives and the Cine Roma. Her remains were transferred from the Memorial Irmã Dulce to the sanctuary’s Chapel of Relics in 2010. After her canonization in 2019, the church took her name. The founding institution continues to tell her life through its social work and memorial spaces.
