At the founder’s tomb

The walk into the basilica leads to a place that has remained a Dominican center since the Order’s first generation. Saint Dominic died in Bologna in 1221; pilgrims still come to his tomb. The Arca is a major work of sculpture, but its first meaning is an altar of remembrance and prayer. Let the eye move from the church’s space to the figures carved around the tomb, and then stay long enough for the object to become a place again.

The Order beside its founder

The Dominican community established itself in Bologna while the young Order of Preachers was taking shape. Dominic’s death here made the convent a lasting point of pilgrimage. The friars’ own account connects early companions, preaching, study, and common prayer to this house. His body was translated into the shrine that developed into the Arca, with work by successive sculptors over several centuries. The artistic history is layered, but the custody claim is direct: this is the founder’s principal tomb, not a distributed relic or a later memorial at another Dominican church.

The basilica is approached from Piazza San Domenico and opens into a long church shaped by medieval and later interventions. The sculpted Arca gathers the eye in Dominic’s chapel. The work of different centuries is visible in its figures and upper shrine; the chapel’s scale and liturgy keep the sculpture from becoming a detached museum piece.
