Mary MacKillop’s chapel is a living Josephite place of worship in North Sydney. Her tomb draws pilgrims from Australia and beyond, while the surrounding place tells of a woman who pursued education and care for those at the margins. The chapel is for prayer first; the museum and gardens can deepen the visit.
A chapel made for remembrance
The chapel was built in 1913 and dedicated in January 1914. Later that month Mary’s remains were moved from Gore Hill Cemetery and reinterred here. The Sisters of Saint Joseph moved the remains within the chapel to the former vestry in 1994, creating the present tomb setting. The chapel remains under their care and welcomes pilgrims to Mass and quiet prayer.
