The Church of Ephesus in stone

The New Testament city did not remain in the first century. Walk into the Church of Mary to meet its later bishops and the council that confessed Christ as one divine Person truly made flesh. The dedication to Mary matters because the one she bore is the Word of God. The ruins invite prayer, but they do not identify one surviving room as the council chamber.

A council and a changing building

Written sources and inscriptions associate this church with the Council of Ephesus in 431. The complex underwent several building phases, and scholars dispute which visible phase corresponds to the council. Its stones are therefore a physical anchor for the fifth-century Church, not a photograph of a single day in 431.

The council condemned Nestorius and upheld the confession that the one born of Mary is the divine Word made flesh. The title Theotokos, Mother of God, belongs within this Christological confession. It was not a detached Marian proclamation. Pope Celestine’s prior judgment and Roman legates belong to the council’s documentary history, but no one surviving wall can carry the full sequence of its sessions.

Move through the courtyard and the remains of the basilical spaces. Changes in wall lines and levels mark a long history of use and alteration. The name Double Church reflects part of that layered architecture; it should not make the pilgrim imagine two untouched churches standing side by side.
