Walsingham is a pilgrimage through places, not one building: the Catholic National Shrine and Slipper Chapel to the south, the Holy Mile or Pilgrim Way between, and the medieval priory and Holy House site in Little Walsingham.

How the shrine and town fit together
Catholic devotional tradition remembers Richeldis de Faverches and the Holy House as an image of Nazareth. The Annunciation leads pilgrims to the mystery of the Incarnation. The original building was destroyed, but the Church’s pilgrimage returned and remains living.
Sacred Geography
From Houghton St Giles to Little Walsingham
The Catholic National Shrine and Slipper Chapel stand at Houghton St Giles, about a mile south of Little Walsingham. The Holy Mile follows the traditional road approach; the parallel Pilgrim Way uses the field and former railway alignment. The priory ruins and original Holy House site lie within Little Walsingham. Great Walsingham is nearby but outside this first pilgrimage circuit.

The Holy Mile is the traditional road approach. The Pilgrim Way is a quieter parallel path via field and former railway alignment.

Little Walsingham
Village streets lead toward the Augustinian priory ruins and the marked site of the lost original Holy House. The modern Anglican Shrine and its Holy House are separate.

Begin in the Slipper Chapel, see the Chapel of Reconciliation and pray according to the current shrine program. The medieval Holy House site lies farther north.

Walk the whole sacred landscape
Start at the Catholic shrine, choose the traditional Holy Mile or separate Pilgrim Way, pass through Little Walsingham and visit the priory grounds if open.

An unhurried overnight pilgrimage
Make the full-day walk, return for further prayer and worship, and spend time with the village’s churches. An ecumenical visit to the separate Anglican Shrine can be added, clearly distinguished from the Catholic shrine and medieval Holy House.
